The Chaunsa legacy: Pakistan’s most celebrated mango

In 1539 the Mughal emperor Humayun was defeated by the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri near the village of Chausa in Bihar. Tradition holds that Sher Shah named his favourite mango after the victory. It is a story rather than a documented pedigree, but the name has outlived the empire it humbled.
West into the Punjab
Over the following centuries the variety was carried west and refined by generations of growers. It found a home in the hot plains of the southern Punjab, and today Chaunsa is one of Pakistan’s best-known mango names.
What makes it different
Chaunsa is not one mango. Agricultural references distinguish several named selections: Sammar Bahisht Chaunsa from mid-July, and White (Sufaid), Black (Kala) and Azeem Chaunsa later, with Punjab reference windows running into October. If a seller offers just “Chaunsa”, it is fair to ask which one.
Golden Multan works with White Chaunsa, a late selection with whitish-yellow flesh. Our guide to Pakistani mango varieties covers every Chaunsa selection in more detail.
To eat a properly ripe White Chaunsa is to taste centuries of patient cultivation.
